Tensions have emerged between scholars of the Darika Islamic order and the Chairman of Kudan Local Government Area, Hon. Dauda Iliya, over alleged neglect of religious events in the area.
A prominent Darika scholar, Sheikh Surajo Bomo Zaria, last week expressed concern about what he described as the chairman’s continued indifference towards the organisation of Mawlid celebrations and Qur’anic recitation events.
Speaking during a Mawlid gathering held in Anguwar Mammada, Kudan LGA, Sheikh Surajo alleged that the chairman has consistently declined to support or attend religious events, despite receiving formal invitations.
"The people of Kudan are facing a difficult time due to the chairman’s refusal to support programs that promote love for the Prophet (PBUH) and fear of God," the scholar said. "Whenever he is invited, he either complains or responds with anger. This is not leadership."
Sheikh Surajo further warned the chairman to remember that the position he holds is temporary and urged him to emulate past leaders who, according to him, respected and supported religious initiatives. He also accused some of the chairman’s close associates of misleading him and sowing division in the community.
When contacted for a response, Hon. Dauda Iliya dismissed the allegations as false and politically motivated. He stated that he has never opposed religious activities and has, in fact, participated in several such programs in the past.
“I am a Muslim, and I support anything that strengthens our faith. These accusations are simply not true,” the chairman said.
However, investigations by this reporter revealed that some Darika followers have begun holding special prayers for a change in leadership, while also expressing dissatisfaction with the chairman’s perceived indifference to Islamic events.
In contrast, Darika scholars commended the Chairman of Sabon Gari Local Government, Hon. Abubakar Jamilu Albani Samaru, for his unwavering support for religious programs and inclusivity in dealing with all Islamic groups.
