The Plateau Progressive Movement (PPM) has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of Senator Shehu Umar Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence. The group also urged the Senate to relieve him of his chairmanship position, citing grave allegations that compromise his ability to hold such a sensitive role.
This demand was contained in a statement signed by the group’s Publicity Secretary, Comrade Dachum Daniel Kajang, and made available to journalists in Kaduna.
“The Plateau Progressive Movement calls for the immediate removal of Senator Shehu Umar Buba from his position as Chairman of the Senate Committee on National Security and Intelligence,” the statement read. His continued tenure in this role is untenable given the serious allegations against him. The Senate must act swiftly to restore public confidence and demonstrate that no one is above the law.
The group further emphasised the urgency of Buba’s arrest and prosecution, stating that the allegations against him are severe and merit a thorough investigation.
“As citizens, we expect our leaders to act with integrity and accountability. Allowing Senator Buba to remain in power while such serious accusations linger sends a dangerous message—that political connections can shield individuals from justice,” the group added.
In the statement titled “Urgent Call for the Arrest and Prosecution of Senator Shehu Umar Buba,” the group declared its firm commitment to the rule of law and the protection of its communities amid rising insecurity.
“Recent revelations have exposed Senator Buba’s alarming ties with bandits and other criminal elements. These developments cast a long shadow over his credibility as a national security leader. We cannot remain silent.”
PPM alleged that Senator Buba’s reported incitement of violence in Toro and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas of Bauchi State has led to loss of innocent lives and heightened fear among residents.
“Such conduct is not only unbecoming of a public servant but also represents a betrayal of the trust placed in him by the people of Plateau State,” the group said.
According to the statement, eyewitness accounts and credible reports indicate that Senator Buba has maintained active engagement with armed groups, including transporting injured bandits for medical care.
“This revelation raises serious ethical and legal concerns. How can a senator entrusted with the safety of his constituents prioritise the welfare of those terrorising them?” the group queried.
PPM also cited a viral video allegedly showing the movement of arms and motorcycles from the senator’s residence to Zamfara State as further evidence of his involvement in criminal activities.
“This blatant disregard for law and order is a direct affront to Nigerians and a troubling indication of the growing link between political power and organised crime. Such actions embolden criminal elements and sabotage the efforts of our security agencies.”
The group reaffirmed its commitment to justice and urged relevant authorities to take immediate and decisive action.
“The time for complacency is over. We must act now to safeguard our future and ensure that those who threaten our security are held accountable. The people of Plateau State deserve no less.”
In response, Senator Buba’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Comrade Sabo Muhammad, dismissed the allegations as baseless and politically motivated.
“These unsubstantiated claims are part of a sponsored smear campaign by disgruntled elements seeking to undermine Senator Buba’s rising political profile,” he said.
Muhammad argued that the Plateau Progressive Movement failed to present verifiable evidence to support its accusations.
“If they were truly patriotic and fact-driven, they would have identified at least one of the alleged injured persons, the name of the hospital, and the nature of the treatment provided.”
He further stated that Toro and Tafawa Balewa local governments currently enjoy relative peace, and any security challenges in those areas are unrelated to the senator.
“Insecurity is unfortunately present even in Plateau, which borders our state. Therefore, this campaign of calumny will not distract the senator from fulfilling his duties, both at the Senate and to his constituents as the only APC senator from Bauchi State,” Muhammad concluded.
