President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Professor Yahaya Isa Bunkure, a renowned academic and expert in science education, as Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Education, Zaria, Kaduna State.
Prof. Bunkure, a native of Kano State, brings decades of experience in teacher education and academic leadership to the role. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Education (Biology) from Bayero University, Kano (1987), a Master’s degree in Science Education from the University of Jos (1995), and a Ph.D. in Science Education from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (2005).
He previously served as Provost of Saadatu Rimi College of Education, Kano, where he played a pivotal role in academic development and institutional restructuring. His tenure as Provost positioned the college for its eventual upgrade to a full-fledged university.
Prof. Bunkure's appointment comes as part of the Federal Government’s strategic effort to reposition colleges of education that were upgraded to universities between 2022 and 2023.
In the same announcement, President Tinubu named Engineer Abdurrazaq Abubakar Nakore as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, and appointed Professor Abdullahi Tukur Kodage as Vice Chancellor of the Kano-based institution.
The appointments were announced on Wednesday, September 3, in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy. As stipulated by law, Pro-Chancellors will serve a four-year term, while Vice Chancellors will serve for five years.
