The Federal Government has officially removed Mathematics as a compulsory subject for students seeking admission into universities to study courses under the Faculty of Arts. The move is aimed at encouraging wider access to tertiary education and reducing unnecessary barriers for prospective students.

According to the announcement, the decision followed recommendations from education stakeholders who argued that the subject was not essential to the academic success of students pursuing arts and humanities degrees.

In a report obtained by Daily Struggle, the new policy will take effect from the next admission cycle, allowing candidates to focus on subjects more relevant to their chosen disciplines, such as Literature, History, Government, and Religious Studies.

Education experts have praised the development, describing it as a bold reform that aligns with global best practices and recognises the diversity of students’ talents and academic strengths. They, however, urged the government to ensure that the change does not compromise educational standards but rather improves inclusivity and flexibility within Nigeria’s higher education system.
