The Kautal Pulaaku Fulbe Association of Nigeria has expressed concern over the growing stigmatization and stereotyping of Fulani people across the country, describing the trend as unjust, divisive, and dangerous to national cohesion.
Speaking during the formal launch of the association and inauguration of its state and zonal executives at Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi, on Sunday, the National President, Alhaji Mohammed Hussaini Buzaye, said the continued criminalisation of the Fulani ethnic group has led to discrimination, hate, and indiscriminate attacks that have claimed innocent lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.
He explained that Fulani communities across Nigeria are facing multiple challenges, including environmental degradation, desertification, community clashes, cattle rustling, animal diseases, and inadequate access to grazing reserves, water points, and cattle routes.
“The Kautal Pulaaku Fulbe Association of Nigeria is a national body dedicated to promoting the welfare, rights, and development of Fulani communities. We want to inspire our youths to reject crime, embrace education, and become responsible citizens contributing to peace and development,” Buzaye said.
He called on government agencies, civil society groups, and the public to stop profiling the Fulani people for the actions of a few, insisting that justice should be individualised. According to him, innocent citizens must not be collectively punished for crimes committed by others.
Buzaye urged newly inaugurated leaders to serve with honesty and accountability, stressing that their positions were a trust to uplift their people, not a platform for personal gain.
“Kautal Pulaaku will never shield criminals; anyone found guilty must face the law. But justice must be fair — no community should be demonised or punished collectively,” he added.
The association’s president announced plans to strengthen leadership structures nationwide, conduct awareness campaigns against unlawful behaviour, empower youths and women, and promote access to education and healthcare for pastoral communities. He also disclosed plans to establish a legal aid and human rights desk to assist members facing injustice or prolonged detention without trial.
Buzaye commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for creating the Ministry of Livestock Development, describing it as a bold step toward addressing long-standing challenges facing herders. He also thanked Senator Shehu Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security, for his support, and appreciated former Bauchi State Governor, Malam Isah Yuguda, the association’s national patron, for his “fatherly guidance and mentorship.”
During the event, the association presented awards of excellence to notable Nigerians, including Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, former Governor Isah Yuguda, Ambassador (Rtd.) Air Marshal Sadique Baba Abubakar, National Security Adviser Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and Senator Shehu Buba Umar, in recognition of their contributions to peace, security, and national development.
