Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has distributed 10,000 packs of menstrual hygiene products to schoolgirls in Zamfara State as part of her Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) programme titled “Flow with Confidence.”

Speaking at the launch of the distribution in Gusau on Wednesday, Mrs. Tinubu said the Flow with Confidence initiative is designed to empower schoolgirls by promoting menstrual hygiene, dignity, and confidence.

“This initiative aims to ensure that no girl misses school because she cannot afford sanitary products,” the First Lady said.

Represented by the Wife of the Zamfara State Governor, Hajiya Huriyya Lawal, Mrs. Tinubu described it as unacceptable that many girls, especially in rural areas, still face challenges during their menstrual cycle, leading to absenteeism and school dropouts.

“Some girls use unsafe and unhygienic alternatives, while others stay at home altogether, falling behind in their studies. This trend must end. The Renewed Hope Initiative seeks to correct that by distributing one-year supplies of disposable sanitary pads to 10,000 schoolgirls in rural communities across Zamfara,” she stated.

She explained that the Renewed Hope Initiative spent ₦2.55 billion to procure locally produced sanitary pads from Uniglory Nigeria Limited in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

“We chose disposable sanitary pads because they are simple, hygienic, and promote women’s reproductive health. No girl should have to choose between her dignity and her education,” she said.

Mrs. Tinubu called on local government chairmen to take ownership of the intervention by ensuring that the products reach the intended beneficiaries, stressing that the pads must not be sold under any circumstances.

She also urged corporate organisations, government agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to support the initiative to expand its reach and impact.

“Traditional, religious, and community leaders have a crucial role to play. Please monitor the distribution in your areas and encourage our girls to stay in school and pursue their dreams with confidence,” she appealed.

“To our students and beneficiaries — this is for you. Do not sell the pads. Stay in school, support one another, and let nothing take away your confidence. You are the future of this nation.”

In her remarks, the Chairperson of the Secondary Schools Education Board, Hajiya Kulu Na’alah, commended the First Lady for the initiative, describing it as a significant step toward promoting girls’ education and dignity.

Represented by the Principal of Government Girls Day Secondary School, Tudunwada, Zainab Ibrahim, Na’alah pledged full support for the programme to ensure that young girls acquire education with dignity and confidence.
