Hon. Garba Ibrahim Madara, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate in the last Kontagora Local Government Area election, has criticised the government for failing to protect the lives and property of residents in the North-Central region.
Madara described as unfortunate the continued invasion of Kontagora, Mashegu, and Borgu by bandits, lamenting that government inaction has emboldened the attackers to enter communities in broad daylight and kill innocent people without resistance.
He expressed sympathy to the affected communities and urged residents to remain steadfast in prayers, saying the state government has shown little concern for the hardship citizens are facing.
“During the last election, security forces were used at polling units to shoot people, which led to the death of our young brother. No leader in government has shown remorse over this tragic incident,” he said.
Madara added that despite alleged electoral malpractice, he and his supporters have surrendered their grievances to God. He urged the councillorship candidates who he claimed were cheated in the polls to remain patient, noting that they contested based on the state government’s promise that the rightful winners would be declared.
“But the truth has been buried under lies. God is watching and will judge,” he said.
Speaking on the skills-acquisition programme through which he trained over four hundred women and youths, Madara said the experience had strengthened his resolve to continue empowering people.
“It is a great blessing to train a person to rely on himself and earn a lawful living. We are in talks with the company that handled the project. Once everything is finalised, we will invite all participants and issue them certificates, which will even qualify them for bank loans to expand their businesses,” he explained.
He maintained that the challenges faced during the election would not weaken his determination.
“We will continue to pursue every initiative that benefits our people and ensure that Kontagora gets the development it deserves. We have been in politics for a long time, and we remain committed to ensuring transparent and fair leadership,” he added.
Madara also appealed to parents to allow their children and dependents to register for voter cards as the ongoing voter registration continues.
“Do not let what happened in the last local government election discourage you from exercising your rights. Injustice cannot last forever. History has shown that those who perpetrate it eventually fade away,” he said.
