Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has presented a proposed 2026 Appropriation Bill of over N1.031 trillion to the State House of Assembly.
The estimate, tagged the “Budget of Consolidation,” was presented by the farmer governor at the chamber of the State House of Assembly in Minna.
According to the breakdown, more than N270 billion, representing 26.19 per cent, is earmarked for recurrent expenditure, while over N761 billion, or 73.81 per cent, is allocated to capital expenditure.
Governor Bago said the budget would be financed through statutory allocations, value-added tax (VAT), internally generated revenue (IGR), other FAAC receipts, capital receipts, grants, and loans. He explained that the proposal builds on past achievements while addressing current challenges, particularly as the state contends with a rapidly evolving global economy.
On the sectoral allocation, the governor disclosed that the economic sector received the highest allocation of over N510 billion, while the transportation sector received the lowest allocation of slightly above N1 billion.
He said government interventions in the 2026 fiscal year would focus on key priority areas, including wealth and job creation, agricultural transformation, strengthening the health sector, consolidation of road infrastructure, and completion of inherited water and electricity projects.
Other focus areas include improvement of the education sector, enhanced internal revenue generation, strict adherence to due process, digital transformation of state-owned media, consolidation of peace and security, and strategic partnerships for development.
“The 2026 Budget is anchored on fiscal discipline, strategic investment, and targeted interventions aimed at expanding economic opportunities for our citizens. It is also designed to ensure the completion of all ongoing infrastructure projects across the state,” the governor said.
He added that the budget reflects the confidence reposed in his administration by the people, noting that despite inflationary pressures and fluctuating revenues, the government has continued to manage resources prudently and deliver tangible results over the past two years.
Governor Bago commended the Speaker and members of the 10th State House of Assembly for their partnership and commitment to the development of Niger State, saying the collaboration has strengthened governance, accelerated service delivery, and reinforced public confidence in the democratic process.
He urged the Assembly to give the budget prompt consideration and passage in the overall interest of the state, while also calling on residents to support his administration in building a secure, green, and prosperous Niger State.
In his response, the Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, AbdulMalik Sarkin Daji, praised the cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature, attributing it to the governor’s respect for the legislature, regular consultations, and commitment to constitutional governance.
He assured that the House would consider and pass the budget within the shortest possible time, while reaffirming its support for policies and programmes aimed at strengthening governance and fast-tracking development in the state.
