The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), under the leadership of its National Amirah, Dr. Fadimatu Sumaye Hamza, has joined millions of women across the world to commemorate the 2026 World Hijab Day—an annual event dedicated to promoting understanding, respect, and freedom of religious expression for Muslim women.
Observed every February 1, World Hijab Day provides a global platform to highlight the significance of the hijab as a symbol of faith, modesty, dignity, and identity, while also addressing widespread misconceptions surrounding Muslim women and their choice to wear it.
To mark the occasion, FOMWAN chapters across states and local government areas organized lectures, outreaches, media engagements, and community sensitization programmes aimed at educating the public on the true essence of the hijab, which is purely an Islamic injunction that Muslim women willingly observe.
While congratulating FOMWAN members nationwide for successfully marking the day, the National Amirah urged them to continue to uphold the banner of respect by showcasing the beauty of Islam and the dignity of the Muslim woman through her hijab. She further called on workplaces and educational institutions to create inclusive environments where Muslim women can practise their faith without fear of harassment, discrimination, or prejudice.
Dr. Hamza also emphasized the need for religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence among Muslims and non-Muslims, noting that Nigeria is a richly diverse society. She stressed that Muslim women are comfortable with their appearance in hijab and do not regard it as a burden, adding that wearing the hijab does not in any way hinder productivity. According to her, numerous accomplished hijabi women have excelled and gained recognition in various fields.
She concluded with prayers for Allah’s reward upon all members for their efforts and encouraged them to remain steadfast and committed in flying the flag of FOMWAN in Nigeria and beyond.
