The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Jigawa State Council, has strengthened its partnership with the Jigawa State Judiciary to deepen public understanding of the judicial system and promote accurate court reporting.

Chairman of the Council, Comrade Ismaila Ibrahim Dutse, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Chief Judge of the State, Hon. Justice Umar M. Sadiq.

Comrade Dutse reaffirmed the union’s commitment to building a collaborative relationship between journalists and the judiciary for the overall benefit of the public.

He underscored the judiciary’s crucial role as the third arm of government, responsible for resolving disputes, and urged the public to respect and utilize judicial processes rather than resorting to jungle justice.

“Our visit aims to strengthen efforts toward disseminating credible and accurate reports of court judgments across the state,” Dutse said.

He further explained that the NUJ leadership had also visited key stakeholders, including the Executive Governor of Jigawa State, Malam Umar A. Namadi, and the Speaker of the State House of Assembly. According to him, this tripartite engagement highlights the importance of synergy among the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary in promoting democratic governance.

Comrade Dutse emphasized that a strong working relationship between the judiciary and the NUJ is essential. He therefore appealed for support in training journalists to enhance their understanding of judicial processes, which will in turn improve public awareness.

Responding, the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Umar M. Sadiq, acknowledged the vital role journalists play in shaping public perception. He urged the NUJ to broaden its coverage to include sensitive court judgments while ensuring accuracy and professionalism.

Justice Sadiq also reaffirmed the judiciary’s openness to media inquiries and encouraged the union to collaborate with tertiary institutions in the state to acquire basic knowledge of judicial procedures—citing the example of the former Kano State Council of the NUJ.

He expressed concern over the spread of misinformation and called on journalists to uphold accuracy in court reporting. The Chief Judge welcomed the NUJ delegation and pledged continued support and cooperation in advancing the union’s activities.
