Former United States President Donald Trump on Thursday said American forces carried out what he described as “powerful and deadly” strikes against fighters of the Islamic State (ISIS) in North-West Nigeria.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump
said the operation targeted militants accused of killing civilians,
particularly Christians, and stated that the action was taken under his
authority as Commander-in-Chief.
“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief,
the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS terrorist
scum in North-West Nigeria,” Trump wrote, alleging the group had been
“viciously killing innocent Christians.”
He added that he had previously warned the
militants to halt the attacks, saying, “If they did not stop the slaughtering
of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was.”
The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), in
a separate statement on X, confirmed that an operation was conducted at the
request of Nigerian authorities and resulted in the deaths of multiple
suspected Islamic State fighters. AFRICOM, however, released limited details
about the timing, location, or method of the strikes.
In his post, Trump credited U.S. military
personnel with executing “numerous perfect strikes” and reiterated his stance
against extremist groups. He concluded the message by praising the U.S.
military and extending Christmas greetings.
Neither
the U.S. Department of Defense nor Nigerian security authorities had, as of the
time of Trump’s post, provided additional independent details regarding
casualties or the precise nature of the operation.
