Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has explained that his resignation from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) was driven by deepening internal crises within the party and the need to protect the overall interest of the people of Kano State.
The governor formally announced his withdrawal from the NNPP on Friday, January 25, 2026, in a letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the party in Gwale Local Government Area. The decision, he said, took effect from January 23, 2026.
In the letter, Governor Yusuf expressed gratitude to the NNPP for providing him a political platform and for the support he received from party leaders and members across Kano State since 2022. However, he noted that persistent leadership disputes and unresolved legal battles had weakened the party’s cohesion at both state and national levels.
According to him, the protracted internal disagreements have resulted in widespread disenfranchisement of party members, creating divisions that appear increasingly irreconcilable and generating uncertainty within the party’s structure.
“After careful reflection, and without prejudice to the party’s capacity to resolve its internal challenges, I have come to the conclusion that my resignation is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” the governor stated.
Governor Yusuf stressed that his decision was taken in good faith and without bitterness, adding that he remains committed to peace, unity and the continued development of Kano State.
The resignation marks a significant political realignment in Kano, as the governor is leaving the party alongside 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly, eight members of the House of Representatives and 44 local government chairmen across the state.
The resignation letter was acknowledged by the NNPP Secretary of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Hon. Kabiru Zubairu, who praised Governor Yusuf’s achievements in infrastructure development, urban renewal, healthcare, education and economic empowerment.
While conceding that the party has been grappling with lingering internal crises, Zubairu said the NNPP had no option but to accept the resignation of what he described as one of its most performing governors.
Governor Yusuf’s exit is expected to reshape the political landscape of Kano State as consultations and alignments continue ahead of future political engagements.
