The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has recorded a series of significant engagements this week, including the commencement of a national curriculum review workshop in collaboration with the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the handover of a hostel construction project, and participation in an international scientific conference.

As part of efforts to reposition technical education in the leather sector, NILEST, in collaboration with NBTE, commenced a National Critique Workshop aimed at reviewing and upgrading the curriculum for Leather and Footwear programmes to align with global standards.

Delivering the keynote address at the opening session, the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NILEST, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, said the workshop was designed to critically assess the existing curriculum and ensure that graduates of the institute are equipped to compete internationally.

The workshop was declared open by the Executive Secretary of NBTE, Professor Idris Bugaje, who was represented by Professor Paul Mamza of the Department of Chemistry, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria. During the exercise, Professor Bugaje also visited the workshop venue and interacted with the Director-General and participants on the progress made.

The institute expressed optimism that the outcome of the workshop would lead to the approval of an enhanced curriculum capable of meeting global best practices in leather and footwear technology.

In a related development, Dr Imam formally handed over the site for the construction of male and female hostels at NILEST to the contractor. The project is sponsored by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajuddeen, PhD, GCON.

The handover ceremony was attended by project consultants, contractors, and the Chairman of Zaria Local Government Council, Hon. Jamil Ahmad Muhammad (Jaga), who represented the Speaker. Contract documents and handover notes were signed at the event, with the project scheduled to commence immediately and expected to be completed within 18 months.

The NILEST Director-General expressed appreciation to stakeholders and conveyed his gratitude, as well as that of the people of Zaria and beneficiaries of the Speaker’s scholarship programme, to the Speaker for sponsoring the project. In his remarks, Hon. Jaga commended the institute’s management for its commitment to ensuring the successful execution of the project.

Meanwhile, Dr. Imam also attended the opening ceremony of the International Conference organised by the Nigeria Society of Physical Sciences (NSPS), held at the Yusuf Bala Usman Auditorium, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The conference attracted prominent dignitaries, including Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, represented by the Director-General of the Kaduna State Schools Quality Assurance Authority, Professor Usman Abubakar Zaria; former Vice-Chancellor of ABU, Professor Ibrahim Garba; and the Deputy National Chairman (North) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Hon. Garba Datti Babawo, among others.

The events underscore NILEST’s ongoing efforts to strengthen academic standards, expand infrastructure, and deepen institutional engagement within the scientific and technical education community.
