Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Tuesday appeared before the Kaduna State High Court following his release to attend the burial of his mother.
El-Rufai is facing multiple charges filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), which include allegations of conversion and possession of public property as well as money laundering.
The former governor was earlier arraigned before Justice Rilwan M. Aikawa on a 10-count charge after being held in detention for over a month. The court had adjourned the case to March 31, 2026, to hear pending applications, including his bail request.
He was, however, granted temporary release on March 27 on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Ummar El-Rufai, in Cairo.
El-Rufai, who is associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has denied all allegations levelled against him.
Prominent political figures, including President Bola Tinubu, sent condolence messages, while Vice-President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, and several governors, among them Uba Sani, attended the funeral.
Other dignitaries who paid condolence visits include former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, former Senate President David Mark, Labour Party’s former presidential candidate Peter Obi, and former ministers Abubakar Malami, Isa Pantami, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rauf Aregbesola.
On Tuesday, El-Rufai was again arraigned alongside one Amadu Sule on additional charges, including alleged abuse of office, fraud, and conferring undue advantage.
He is also expected to appear before the Federal High Court in Kaduna, where his bail application will be heard.
