The Bauchi State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has strongly condemned the alleged assault on a staff member of Albarka Radio in Bununu, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of the state.
In a press release dated March 23, 2026, and signed by its Secretary, Isah Garba Gadau, the union described the incident, which reportedly occurred during the Sallah celebration, as “barbaric and unacceptable.”
The NUJ said the alleged attack by some police officers constitutes a gross violation of human rights and a direct assault on press freedom, noting that such actions undermine the role of security agencies expected to protect citizens.
“It is particularly disturbing that such misconduct is occurring at a time when the NUJ is intensifying advocacy for professionalism and accountability among security agencies,” the statement said.
The council called on the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, to immediately investigate the incident and ensure that any officers found culpable are sanctioned accordingly.
It also demanded that the Bauchi State Police Command take full responsibility for the victim’s medical expenses without delay.
The union warned that failure to meet its demands could compel it to convene an emergency congress to determine further action.
The NUJ further urged media organisations in the state to remain vigilant and await further directives, stressing that it would not relent until justice is served and the safety of journalists is guaranteed.
“The NUJ will not tolerate intimidation, harassment, or brutality against journalists under any circumstances,” the statement added.
