Two explosions struck parts of Maiduguri on Monday evening, targeting the popular Monday Market and the gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital shortly after the breaking of the Ramadan fast.
The blasts reportedly occurred at about 7:20 p.m., causing panic among residents in the affected areas.
The spokesperson of the Borno State Police Command, Nahum Kenneth Daso, confirmed the incident in a statement posted on his X account.
According to him, security agencies and emergency responders were immediately deployed to the locations following reports of the suspected explosions.
“Following reports of a suspected explosion at Maiduguri Monday Market and UMTH gate at about 7:20 PM, joint security operatives and emergency responders have been deployed,” the statement said.
He added that the Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit from Base 13 Maiduguri had been mobilised to the scene to assess the situation.
Authorities also advised residents to remain calm and avoid the affected areas while security agencies carry out further investigations and safety assessments.
Emergency contact numbers were also provided for members of the public seeking assistance or wishing to report information related to the incident.
