Airstrike in Yobe: Amnesty Condemns Killing of Over 100 Civilians

Amnesty International has strongly condemned a military airstrike that reportedly killed more than 100 people in Jilli, Futchimiram area of Geidam Local Government Area in Yobe State.

According to eyewitness accounts, three military jets allegedly bombed a local market on Saturday, resulting in mass civilian casualties. Witnesses described scenes of chaos and devastation as traders and residents scrambled for safety during the aerial assault.

Medical sources at Geidam General Hospital confirmed that at least 35 injured victims had been admitted to the emergency unit, many of them with severe injuries. Health workers say the number of casualties could rise as more victims are brought in from surrounding areas.

In a statement, Amnesty International denounced the strike as a gross violation of human rights, stressing that the use of air raids in civilian-populated areas is neither lawful nor justified as a method of law enforcement.

“Launching air raids is not a legitimate law enforcement method by anyone’s standard,” the organization said, describing the attack as “reckless,” “outrageous,” and indicative of a “shocking disregard for civilian lives.”

The rights group further characterized the incident as an example of excessive and unlawful use of force on a catastrophic scale, accusing Nigeria’s armed forces of deploying military tactics in what should be a civilian security operation.

Amnesty International called on Nigerian authorities to conduct an immediate, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident, urging that anyone found responsible be held accountable.
