Fresh details have emerged on the internal crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC), with allegations of breached agreements, leadership disputes, and external interference threatening party cohesion ahead of key activities.
In a statement attributed to former lawmaker Ishaku Abbo, the genesis of the crisis was traced to the resignation of the party’s former Deputy National Chairman, Nafiu Bala, along with members of the National Working Committee (NWC). The resignation, according to Abbo, was intended to pave the way for a new leadership under David Mark as National Chairman and Rauf Aregbesola as National Secretary.
Abbo claimed that prior to the leadership transition, an agreement had been reached to allocate certain party positions across geopolitical zones to accommodate members of legacy blocs. Under the arrangement, Nafiu Bala was reportedly to assume the position of National Vice Chairman (North-East), a role considered lower than his previous office.
However, tensions reportedly escalated when the new leadership allegedly reneged on the agreement during the formation of a fresh NWC, instead appointing Babachir David Lawal to the position.
The development, Abbo alleged, led to discontent within the party, with Nafiu Bala rejecting an alternative offer and subsequently mobilising support against the leadership.
Abbo further alleged that the crisis has since drawn in external actors, including unnamed political figures and government officials, accusing them of orchestrating legal and institutional pressures against the party. He also claimed that actions by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against the ADC were influenced by powerful interests within government circles.
The allegations could not be independently verified as of the time of filing this report, and no official response has been issued by the ADC leadership, INEC, or the individuals mentioned.
Observers say the dispute highlights ongoing challenges within Nigeria’s party system, where leadership tussles and internal disagreements often undermine party stability and democratic processes.
Abbo, who said he possesses further details on the matter, announced plans to address the media, promising to provide more insights into the controversy and alleged irregularities affecting the party, particularly in Adamawa State.
The ADC has yet to issue an official statement clarifying the situation or outlining steps to resolve the growing crisis.
