Ex-Governor, Barrister M. A: Bauchi Must Reject the Return of a Failed, Controversial Leader - Comrd Yahaya M Abdullahi

It is nothing short of an insult to the people of Bauchi State that Barrister M. A. Abubakar is once again parading himself as a candidate for leadership. A man whose tenure is remembered by many as empty, directionless, and riddled with controversy now wants another chance—as if Bauchi citizens have forgotten.

This is not just about poor performance; this is about a legacy clouded by staggering allegations of corruption and financial recklessness. We are talking about claims of ₦400 billion allegedly siphoned through ghost worker schemes, ₦47 billion Paris Club funds reportedly mismanaged, and investigations into ₦19.9 billion by anti-corruption authorities. These are not small accusations—they are figures that could have transformed Bauchi State into a model of development.

Instead, what do the people have to show for those years? Where are the roads, the hospitals, the schools, the industries? Where is the evidence of responsible leadership? For many citizens, the answer is simple: nowhere.

Even more outrageous are reports that public assets were allegedly diverted for personal gain—government vehicles worth millions sold off at giveaway prices to insiders. At the same time, the state was allegedly left drowning in over ₦137 billion in debt, placing a heavy burden on future generations.

And when criticism began to pour in, what did we see? A leader who reportedly could not even withstand public scrutiny—retreating from engagement, shutting down communication channels, and distancing himself from the very people he once sought votes from.

Now, this same individual believes he deserves another opportunity to govern. On what basis? On what record? On what moral ground?

Leadership is not a rehabilitation center for failed politicians. Bauchi State is not a testing ground for recycled ambition. It is a state filled with hardworking people who deserve accountability, progress, and leadership they can trust.

The truth is harsh, but it must be said: allowing a return under these circumstances would not just be a political mistake—it would be a betrayal of the people of Bauchi.

The voters must decide whether to move forward—or to reopen a chapter many would rather leave behind.
