The Islamic movement under the leadership of His Eminence Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has announced that its annual Ashura processions will take place nationwide on Friday, June 26, 2026, to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS).
The announcement was contained in a press statement issued on Wednesday by the movement's Media Forum and signed by Ammar Muhammad Rajab.
According to the statement, the processions, scheduled for Muharram 11, 1448 AH, were postponed by one day to coincide with the Ashura observance in the holy city of Karbala, Iraq, as confirmed by the office of Sheikh Zakzaky on Tuesday. It added that while the processions would hold on Friday, the prescribed Ashura rites and observances could still be carried out on Thursday, the 10th of Muharram.
The movement said this year's Ashura commemoration began on the first day of Muharram and has been observed in more than 600 towns and villages across over 23 states of the federation, including the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
It described Ashura as one of the most significant events in Islamic history, marking the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (SAWA), who was killed alongside members of his family and companions at the Battle of Karbala in 61 AH.
According to the statement, the annual commemoration serves as a reminder of Imam Husain's sacrifice in defence of justice, truth and the preservation of Islam. The Movement said the tragedy of Karbala continues to inspire resistance against oppression and tyranny, describing Imam Husain's martyrdom as "the moral victory of truth over falsehood."
The statement also highlighted the role of Imam Zainul Abideen (AS) and Sayyidah Zainab (AS), saying their courage and speeches after the events of Karbala helped awaken the Muslim community to what it described as the injustice committed against the Prophet's household.
The Movement said its Ashura processions symbolise solidarity with Imam Husain and reaffirm commitment to justice, while rejecting oppression and tyranny in all forms.
Quoting the late Imam Khomeini, the statement reiterated the slogan, "Every day is Ashura, and every land is Karbala," urging those committed to justice and moral responsibility to remain steadfast in opposing injustice.
It reaffirmed its commitment to continue the annual Ashura commemoration across Nigeria, saying the Movement would remain dedicated to promoting justice, truth and resistance against oppression.
The statement ended with the slogan, "Labbaika Ya Husain."
