Government Day Secondary School (G. D.S.S.) Zaria Class of 1986 Alumni Association held a grand reunion on Saturday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of their graduation.
The event took place at the Centre of Excellence, located within the campus of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
According to our correspondent, the reunion was organised to strengthen friendship and unity among members, while exploring ways to contribute to the development of their alma mater and promote educational advancement.
The event attracted alumni from across Nigeria and members of the association who travelled from overseas to attend.
Several papers were presented during the reunion, highlighting the importance of unity, mutual support, and sustained contributions to the growth of both the association and the school.
One of the keynote speakers, Professor Suleiman Balarabe, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Education (FUE), Zaria, urged alumni, particularly those occupying strategic positions in government and the private sector, to increase their support for educational development.
He also encouraged members to remain compassionate and committed to serving society, stressing that giving back to their former school is a demonstration of gratitude to God for their achievements in life.
In his goodwill message, the Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Professor Adamu Ahmed, represented by the Director of the Institute of Education, Professor Abubakar Jumare, urged the association to continue placing a high premium on education, describing it as the foundation of societal development.
He wished the association continued success and prayed for a rewarding reunion.
Also speaking, Professor Ahmed Muhammad Bakori, Katsina State Commissioner for Agriculture and an alumnus of the school, expressed delight at reuniting with his former classmates after many years. He pledged that, by the grace of God, they would continue supporting the development of the school.
Similarly, Rt. Hon. Ahmed Muhammad Cokali, a Commissioner with the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Civil Service Commission representing the North-West geopolitical zone, commended the association for sustaining the bond among its members and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting both the school and the association's activities.
In his remarks, Rear Admiral Muhammad Miftah Abdullahi (Rtd) said every success he had achieved in life was rooted in the education he received at D.S.S. Zaria. He pledged to continue contributing to the growth and development of both the school and the alumni association.
Representing the Emir of Zazzau, His Royal Highness Ambassador Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli, the Sarkin Ayyukan Zazzau, Alhaji Engineer Balarabe Ibrahim Umsa, delivered the Emir's goodwill message.
The Emir commended the alumni for their commitment to their alma mater and assured them of the Zazzau Emirate's continued support.
The Chairman of the Reunion Planning Committee, Alhaji Aliyu A. Bamalli, who is also the Sarkin Noman Zazzau, said organising the reunion came with several challenges, but expressed gratitude to Almighty God for its successful outcome.
He also appreciated all alumni who attended the event, as well as those who were unable to be present.
At the end of the reunion, the association honoured several distinguished members with awards in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the school and the alumni body.
Among the award recipients were Rear Admiral Muhammad Miftah Abdullahi (Rtd), Professor Ahmed Muhammad Bakori, Professor Aliyu Musa, Alhaji Aliyu A. Bamalli, the Sarkin Noman Zazzau, and several other members.
In his closing remarks, the Chairman of the Association's Publicity Committee, Hon. Adamu Bello (Ability), thanked all participants for attending the reunion and prayed for their safe journeys back to their respective destinations.
