Niger State Governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, has disclosed that the state government is working with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to enlist the Bida Sallah Durbar (Hawan Bariki) among globally recognised cultural festivals.

The governor made this known at this year’s Bida Emirate Sallah Durbar held in Bida.

Governor Bago, who described the Sallah Durbar as a unique cultural event, stressed the need for it to gain international recognition. He noted that the festival, which has been held for many years in Bida, continues to serve as a platform for peace, unity, and cultural cohesion among the Nupe people across the country.

He also commended the Etsu Nupe and Chairman of the Niger State Council of Traditional Rulers, Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar, for his vision and commitment to preserving and promoting Nupe cultural heritage.

In his remarks, the Etsu Nupe said the Durbar, which is held to mark the end of the Eid-el-Kabir celebration, is aimed at preserving and showcasing Nupe cultural identity.

He expressed appreciation to the people for their support in ensuring the success of the event and prayed for lasting peace and security in the state as well as continued success for the administration of Governor Bago.

Highlights of the event included the presentation of certificates of merit to the Governor, his wife, Hajiya Fatima Bago, and the Etsu Nupe by the G5 Grassroots Mobilisation Group and the Masaba Solidarity Movement.

The occasion also featured rich displays of Nupe culture, including traditional music performances by local artistes and horse-riding displays by various traditional titleholders.

The Governor later proceeded to the Umaru Magaji area, where he witnessed a royal procession led by traditional titleholders, including the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, who stopped to exchange greetings with the governor and presented him with kola nuts.

Governor Bago was accompanied by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Yakubu Garba; Member representing Bida/Gbako/Katcha Federal Constituency, Saidu Musa Abdullahi; APC National Vice Chairman (North Central), Muazu Bawa Rijau; Chairman of Bida Local Government Council, Usman Muhammad Manko; Commissioner for Health, Dr. Murtala Bagana; and Commissioner for Power and Renewable Energy, Suleiman Umar.
