Heavy security presence was observed across parts of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Monday as civil society organisations (CSOs) staged a protest over the abduction of students and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area.
Reports indicate that 39 students and seven teachers were kidnapped on Friday, 15 May 2026, in affected communities within the area.
The protesters took to the streets of Ibadan to demand urgent action for the release of the victims, who have remained in captivity since the incident.
Security operatives, including personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), were deployed at strategic locations such as the Oyo State Government Secretariat in Agodi, Idi-Ape, Iwo Road, Sango, Dugbe, Total Garden, Mokola Roundabout, and surrounding areas.
A heavy presence was also recorded at key junctions across the city as authorities moved to maintain order during the demonstration.
At Mokola Roundabout around 8:30 a.m., members of the Take-It-Back Movement were seen leading the protest.
The demonstrators carried placards with various inscriptions calling for improved security and urgent rescue efforts. Some of the messages included: “Security for all, not for a few,” “Government must end kidnapping in Oyo State,” “We demand safer roads and communities,” “Protect farmers, traders and students,” and “Peace, security and justice.”
One of the protesters, identified as Kunle, said citizens are increasingly frustrated by the worsening insecurity in the country.
He said Nigerians, particularly residents of Oyo State, are tired of the persistent security challenges and want immediate action from authorities.
