Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has called on media practitioners across Nigeria to uphold professionalism, ethical standards and patriotism in order to promote accountability, transparency and national development.
The governor made the call while declaring open the Arewa Media Summit in Kano, describing the event as a timely platform for journalists, broadcasters, filmmakers, digital content creators, academics and policymakers to exchange ideas on strengthening governance and public trust.
Speaking at the summit, Governor Yusuf said the theme, "Government, Citizens: Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice," underscores the media's vital role in sustaining democracy and fostering constructive engagement between government and the people.
He stressed that an informed citizenry is the bedrock of every democratic society, noting that the media has a constitutional responsibility to educate the public, promote transparency and hold public officials accountable through factual, balanced and responsible reporting.
The governor urged media professionals to adhere to the principles of ethical journalism by verifying information before publication and avoiding misinformation, sensationalism and divisive narratives that could threaten national unity.
Governor Yusuf also called for stronger collaboration among government, the media and citizens, describing responsible journalism and access to credible information as essential pillars of good governance and sustainable development.
He reaffirmed the Kano State Government's commitment to supporting ethical journalism and initiatives aimed at strengthening public communication and enhancing citizens' participation in governance.
The governor further commended the organisers of the Arewa Media Summit for providing a platform to advance discussions on the future of the media and its contribution to national development.
