The Management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN) has clarified that Dr. Nasa’i Gwadabe is no longer affiliated with the institution, following the expiration and non-renewal of his one-year appointment as a Visiting Lecturer in May 2026.
In a statement issued by the university, the management said recent social media reports describing Dr. Gwadabe as a current member of staff were inaccurate and urged media organisations and the public to report the matter correctly.
According to the statement, MAAUN appoints Visiting Lecturers on one-year contracts, with renewal dependent on satisfactory performance, institutional requirements, and management approval. It noted that Dr. Gwadabe’s appointment was not renewed after it expired, adding that the same decision affected several other Visiting Lecturers.
The university also reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy on sexual harassment, abuse, and exploitation, stressing that the policy is widely communicated across the institution.
As part of efforts to encourage reporting of misconduct, MAAUN disclosed that its Founder has instituted a reward of ₦5 million for any female student who reports and provides credible evidence of sexual harassment or assault involving any lecturer or staff member through the appropriate channels.
The management further dismissed what it described as inaccurate claims linked to the matter, including reports alleging that a student was delayed in completing her studies for two years.
It explained that such claims were unfounded, noting that the university only recently graduated its first cohort of students.
The statement also rejected reports alleging that a postgraduate student was among the victims, pointing out that MAAUN has not yet commenced postgraduate programmes, making such claims "factually untenable."
The university urged journalists and members of the public to avoid referring to Dr. Gwadabe as a current staff member, reiterating that his affiliation with the institution ended in May 2026 when his appointment expired and was not renewed.
MAAUN reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards of integrity, transparency, accountability, and academic excellence.
