The Niger State Ministry of Agriculture has urged farmers across the state to take immediate precautionary measures following a flood alert issued by the Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Environment and the National Flood Early Warning Systems Centre.
According to the advisory, heavy rainfall is forecast across several parts of the country between 19 July and 1 August 2026, with a high likelihood of widespread flooding in 28 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The anticipated flooding is attributed to persistent rainfall, saturated soils, rising river levels, and overstretched drainage systems.
Niger State is among the states identified as being at high risk, with Minna, Mokwa, Shiroro, Suleja, and Bida listed as areas requiring close monitoring due to rising river levels and their proximity to floodplains.
In light of the forecast, the Ministry has advised farmers, particularly those in flood-prone and low-lying communities, to take proactive measures to safeguard their crops, livestock, farm equipment, and other agricultural investments.
The Ministry urged farmers to harvest mature crops where possible, relocate farm inputs and machinery to safer locations, move livestock to higher ground, avoid farming near overflowing rivers and streams, and remain updated through official weather forecasts and emergency advisories.
It also called on Agricultural Extension Officers, community leaders, and other relevant stakeholders to intensify public sensitisation efforts to ensure that farmers receive timely information and guidance on flood preparedness.
Residents were further advised to clear blocked drainage channels, refrain from dumping refuse into waterways, and cooperate fully with emergency management agencies if evacuation becomes necessary.
The Niger State Ministry of Agriculture reaffirmed its commitment to supporting farmers and protecting agricultural production across the state.
The Ministry also encouraged farmers to remain vigilant and promptly report any flood-related incidents to the appropriate authorities.
