The controversial Director-General of the Presidential Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC), Adeniyi Adeyemi, has been detained at the headquarters of the Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) in Abuja following his arrest over the alleged operation of what authorities described as a "fake" Federal Government agency.

Daily Trust gathered that Adeyemi was arrested by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team led by Chief Superintendent of Police Moses Lohor in Osun State before he was taken to Ibadan and subsequently flown to Abuja in compliance with a warrant issued by Justice Mohammed Umar of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

Sources said the self-acclaimed PFIPC boss is currently undergoing intensive interrogation at the IRT headquarters, located at the former Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) facility in Guzape, Abuja.

A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment publicly, confirmed that Adeyemi remains in custody.

"He was arrested by IRT officials, not by any officers attached to any of the commands. So, he's presently at IRT headquarters answering questions," the source said.

According to the source, investigators are questioning Adeyemi over allegations bordering on the unlawful operation of an organisation allegedly presented as a Federal Government agency, alongside other activities currently under investigation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had earlier directed the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the controversy surrounding the organisation and submit its findings within 30 days.

Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the Nigeria Police Force were unsuccessful. The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, said he would verify the development but had yet to respond as of the time of filing this report.

Gbajabiamila Demands N15bn Damages

Meanwhile, the President's Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, has filed a N15 billion defamation suit against Adeyemi over allegations that he demanded a 48 per cent kickback from a N27.3 billion take-off grant reportedly approved for a federal agency.

The suit, filed before the Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja, seeks N10 billion as general damages, N5 billion as aggravated damages and N200 million as the cost of litigation.

Gbajabiamila is also asking the court to compel Adeyemi to publish a full retraction and apology in five national newspapers and to pin the apology on all social media platforms and online channels where the alleged defamatory statements were circulated for a period of 30 days.
