The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC), Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, FCNA, FNIM, FNIIS (Katukan Yauri), on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, led members of the Commission's Management Team on a strategic visit to the palace of the Emir of Lere, His Royal Highness, Engr. Suleiman Umar, as part of efforts to deepen stakeholder engagement and strengthen collaboration with host communities in Kaduna State.
The visit followed a stakeholders' meeting held on Monday, August 3, 2026, providing an opportunity for the Commission to engage directly with the traditional institution on the developmental needs and environmental challenges facing the people of the Lere Emirate.
During the meeting, discussions centred on priority interventions required to improve the well-being of residents, ongoing development projects within the Emirate, and strategies for strengthening collaboration between the Commission, traditional institutions, and host communities to ensure sustainable development.
The Managing Director reaffirmed N-HYPPADEC's commitment to delivering impactful interventions that respond to the unique needs of hydroelectric power-producing communities while promoting transparency, accountability, and inclusive development.
He noted that the Commission places great importance on continuous engagement with traditional rulers, whose leadership and grassroots influence remain critical to the successful implementation and sustainability of government interventions.
The Emir of Lere, Engr. Suleiman Umar, commended the Commission for its sustained commitment to improving the living conditions of host communities and appreciated the management for engaging directly with the traditional institution to better understand the developmental priorities of the Emirate.
The visit reaffirmed N-HYPPADEC's resolve to work closely with traditional rulers, state governments, local authorities, and community stakeholders in delivering projects that promote sustainable development, environmental protection, improved security, and enhanced livelihoods across its mandate areas.
The Managing Director also inspected the ongoing construction of a Police Division by the Lere Emirate Development Association, a community-driven initiative aimed at strengthening security and enhancing the safety of lives and property in the Emirate.
The project, which is about 70 per cent complete, is expected to support law enforcement agencies in curbing criminal activities and improving community security.
N-HYPPADEC, through the Managing Director, pledged to support the community in completing the project as soon as possible to facilitate its effective utilisation.
The Management Team also undertook an inspection tour of the Lere River, a tributary of River Kaduna, which poses a threat to the only bridge linking the Emirate headquarters with neighbouring communities, for possible intervention.
The visit enabled the Commission to assess the condition of the river corridor and evaluate measures required to contain the river's flow in order to minimise the risk of flooding and gully erosion during the rainy season.
The inspection forms part of N-HYPPADEC's broader flood risk management and environmental protection initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of flooding, protecting vulnerable communities, and strengthening resilience against climate-related disasters.
