Amnesty International has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the killing of social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, whose body was reportedly found at his residence in Gaida, Kano.
In a statement, the human rights organisation said it “strongly condemns” the killing, alleging that Dan Shagamu was brutally slaughtered after being overpowered by his attackers.
Amnesty International urged the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that anyone suspected of involvement is brought to justice.
The organisation stressed that outspoken individuals and government critics should be accommodated and listened to in a democratic society rather than being subjected to violence.
It also expressed concern over what it described as inadequate efforts by the Nigerian Government to prevent killings, threats, intimidation and other serious human rights violations, particularly as the country approaches upcoming elections.
According to Amnesty International, it has continued to receive reports of politically motivated threats to life and intimidation as the elections draw closer.
The organisation therefore urged the authorities to take effective measures to protect citizens and safeguard their rights amid growing political tensions.
Amnesty International's statement did not identify any individual or group as responsible for Dan Shagamu's killing.
