The Nigeria Union of Mines Workers (NUMW) has called on state governments and law enforcement agencies to respect and enforce mining laws in accordance with the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution and other relevant legislation.

The National President of NUMW, Comrade Musa Adamu Nasko, made the call while commenting on the forthcoming Nigeria Mining Week, scheduled to take place in Abuja on Wednesday.

Comrade Nasko expressed concern over reports of alleged interference by state governments and security agencies in mining operations, particularly in Niger State, where an incident reportedly resulted in the killing of 37 miners by Civil Defence officers.

He noted that the Nigerian Constitution and relevant mining laws provide a legal framework for the regulation of mineral resources in the country, adding that many mining companies operate in accordance with the established rules.

The NUMW president, however, expressed concern over what he described as inappropriate operations by some Civil Defence officers allegedly working in collaboration with other government agencies. He accused some officials of using enforcement operations as an avenue for personal gain through arrests and bail-related practices.

He also questioned the transparency and accountability of funds collected during such operations, arguing that it was unclear whether the money was remitted to the Federal Government. According to him, mineral resources fall under federal jurisdiction, as provided by the Nigerian Constitution and relevant laws.

Speaking on the significance of Nigeria Mining Week, Nasko said the event provides an opportunity to showcase the country's mineral wealth, engage investors and strengthen collaboration among local and international stakeholders in the mining sector.

He noted that Nigeria is endowed with valuable mineral resources, including gold, silver, copper and various gemstones, which could attract investment and contribute to national economic development.

Nasko further urged the Federal Government to ensure that state governments and security agencies operate within the limits of the law, stressing that states should not take enforcement into their own hands or disregard established regulatory procedures while awaiting revenue allocations from the Federation Account.

He disclosed that NUMW was preparing to intensify sensitisation and awareness campaigns targeting miners, state governments and security agencies to promote compliance with the Constitution and relevant mining regulations.

According to him, such efforts are necessary to address alleged interference in mining operations and prevent further loss of lives among miners.

The NUMW president also called on the relevant ministries responsible for solid minerals to ensure that their actions remain consistent with the law, warning that the union would not remain silent over what it considers improper practices in the management and regulation of the mining sector.
