Jebeli
stated that Iran is calling for the “immediate and unconditional release” of
Hashemi, who was reportedly taken into custody upon landing at St. Louis
Lambert international airport.
“Last night, Tehran time, when she called her
children, she said that she has been subjected to violent, illegal and inhumane
treatment in prison,” he stated. He said
that the US government must apologise for their “inhumane behaviour” towards
Marzieh Hashemi.
According
to Jebeli, Hashemi was forced to take off her hijab and was offered pork in the
meals she was given. After Hashemi refused to eat pork, she was “only given
just a little bread and biscuits.”
Hashemi,
who works for Iran’s English-language Press TV television news network, has
reportedly been imprisoned for unspecified reasons.
The
American-born journalist and television presenter, who had been traveling
within the United States to visit her ill brother and other relatives, was
reportedly detained at St. Louis Lambert International Airport on Sunday, and
later transferred by the FBI to the detention facility.
Relatives
had reportedly been unable to contact her for over 48 hours, and only recently
learned about her detention.
