All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Bauchi state, Ambassador Sadique Baba Abubakar has expressed worrisome that Bauchi has the highest number of out-of-school children with attendance in schools of only 29. 9 per cent.
This figure of only 29.9 per cent, he said, is against the national average attendance in schools of 68 per cent, describing it as in very bad shape education sector in Bauchi, saying the state is far lagging behind.
Ambassador Sadique Abubakar in a chat with journalists in Bauchi Tuesday night in his house said, “The education sector is in very bad shape and we have the highest number of out-of-school children in Nigeria today. Most of our children that should have been in classrooms, do not have access to education”.
Abubakar was speaking in a thank-you message to supporters, members, APC chieftains and the ruling party federal government delegation led by President Muhammadu Buhari who were in Bauchi Monday for the APC presidential campaign rally organized by the campaign council under the tutelage of its flagbearer, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The Bauchi governorship flagbearer observed that only private schools are working in Bauchi which are very expensive with only a few people that could afford the cost of education, saying however “we are not against private schools, what we are against is the situation where the majority of our citizens could not have access to the basic requirements of education”.
He said on access to education, “We have the highest out-of-school children in Nigeria today, most of our children that should have been in classrooms do not have access to education. It is an education-driven society, it is either you are part of the process or you are forgotten”.
Abubakar, also the immediate past Air Marshal of the Nigerian Air Force stated, “Once it is only the children of the minority that are going to schools, you are going to run into a big problem because those children of the majority will end up taking everywhere and fighting those that are going to schools”.
