Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) says it has recorded a 45 percent reduction in road crashes in the year 2023, although deaths increased by 15 percent.
The Sector Commander, CC. Iro Danladi disclosed in an interview with the Newsmen in Gusau.
He said, that the command experienced a huge reduction for the first time in history.
He said, that even though the deaths that occurred from accidents during the year had increased by 15%, this was due to some crashes involving trucks conveying livestock to other parts of the country.
CC, Danladi said what caused a higher rate of fatalities in such crashes was the number of people who joined the vehicles alongside goods for cheap transport fare and in the event of an accident many of them died.
The FRSC Boss observed that the major concern of the FRSC was how to raise awareness among individuals who joined such trucks for their transportation because they did not belong to any defined group.
"We will continue to partner with the communities and religious leaders toward enlightening the public on the need for safety on our roads. And for drivers, the command worried about the rate of overloading, speeding, and road violations.
" The critical offenses are responsible for major auto crashes in 2023, we look forward to addressing the challenges in the current year."
Danladi commended the road reconstruction project of the Zamfara State Government, this will no doubt help to further reduce carnage on our roads.
He called on motorists to be more careful while driving during these special conditions.
