The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) command in Bauchi State reports the arrest of 288 suspects for drug-related offenses and the seizure of 2.7 tons of various drugs between July 2023 and June 2024 in the state.
The State Commander, Mr. Ali Aminu, stated this at a news conference on Wednesday in Bauchi to commemorate the 2024 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, June 26.
According to him, the State Command arrested 288 drug suspects and seized a grand total of 2.7 tons of various drugs.
“That includes cannabis sativa, popularly known as wee-wee, Diazepam, Exol-5, Pentazocine, Methamphetamine, Rohypnol, and Tramadol, which were seized from July 2023 to June 2024,” he said.
Aminu further reported that sixty suspects have been successfully prosecuted, and fifty-one cases are pending at the Federal High Court in Bauchi.
“While thirty-five clients or drug users have been counseled and rehabilitated, most of them through brief interventions in NDLEA custody in the state,” the Commander said.
Aminu, however, warned the general public against indulging in the illicit use and trafficking of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
The Narcotics Commander emphasized that anyone arrested with hard drugs would definitely be prosecuted.
He commended sister agencies for their tireless efforts in assisting to apprehend drug dealers and urged them to continue liaising with the agency to curb the drug menace in the state.
Aminu appreciated the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retired), for repositioning the agency and instilling new zeal among the personnel to fight the scourge of illicit drug abuse and trafficking in the country.
He also commended Governor Bala Mohammed for his keen interest and immense logistical support rendered to the State Command towards eradicating illicit drug abuse and trafficking.
