The Zamfara State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called on the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to take stringent actions against individuals using the union's stickers on their vehicles without being members of the union. The NUJ has condemned this practice as fraudulent and urged the FRSC to treat such impersonation seriously.
The Chairman of the Council, Ibrahim Musa Maizare, expressed deep concern over the increasing prevalence of this issue, emphasizing that it will not be tolerated. Maizare made this statement during a courtesy visit by the State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Umar Masa’udu, to the NUJ State Council in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital.
Maizare highlighted that due to these impersonations, the National Secretariat of the NUJ has mandated the issuance of identification cards to all authentic members of the union.
“Anyone caught with an NUJ sticker should be arrested and punished unless they can prove their membership in the Nigeria Union of Journalists,” Maizare stated.
“Prior to the current Sector Commander’s arrival, we made several attempts to curb this impersonation, but our efforts were unsuccessful.”
In response, the State FRSC Sector Commander, Umar Masa’udu, pledged to ensure justice is served and to address the issue effectively. He praised the NUJ members for their ongoing support to the FRSC and acknowledged the crucial role journalists play as societal watchdogs.
Masa’udu appealed to NUJ members to continue supporting the FRSC through their writings and awareness campaigns to help the corps achieve its objectives in the state. “I was deployed to the state to do my best, and I assure you that there will be no sacred cows or untouchables in the discharge of my constitutional responsibilities,” he said.
