The National Hydro-Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has announced an investment of approximately N255 million to train 800 youths in Kwara State across 32 different trade areas.

During a one-day stakeholders' meeting held in Ilorin on Thursday, Abubakar Yelwa, the commission’s managing director, outlined the objectives of the Youth Transformation Programme (YTP). The programme is designed to empower young people in the state by providing them with the skills and resources necessary to become self-reliant and productive members of society.

Represented by Dr. Mahmood Umar, Director of the Directorate of Community and Rural Development, Yelwa stated that the meeting aimed to provide updates and raise awareness about the programme's progress.

Addressing concerns about the possible diversion of starter packs meant for beneficiaries, Yelwa clarified that the commission is making all necessary arrangements for the graduation ceremony and distribution of starter packs. The distribution, scheduled for August, will be conducted in batches by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu.

Yelwa also disclosed that the commission has covered the cost of business name registrations for the beneficiaries, preparing them to become employers. He expressed confidence that the items would be delivered to beneficiaries in time for the programme's launch, as agreed with contractors.

To prevent the sale of starter packs, Yelwa mentioned that measures have been implemented, including branding the packs as “not for sale.” Beneficiaries are required to fill out guarantor forms to ensure compliance and a monitoring committee has been established to oversee them post-graduation.

In addition, Yelwa advocated for the enactment of a law mandating life jackets for boat passengers across the country. He urged the leadership of the Houses of Assembly in the commission’s catchment areas to expedite the process of enacting such a law to reduce fatalities from boat accidents in riverine communities. Yelwa highlighted the urgency of this measure, recalling a tragic incident in which 130 people lost their lives in a single boat mishap.
