On the morning of Tuesday, July 9, 2024, members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) staged a peaceful protest at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
The protest, which began at Mamman Kwantagora and ended at the university's main gate, saw a large turnout of members from both associations.
Comrade Yunusa, the Chairman of SSANU and the leader of the protest, addressed the crowd. He explained that the protest was organized under the directive of the national body of the associations due to the Federal Government's failure to fulfil its promise regarding their withheld salaries and allowances, which have remained unpaid for several months.
Comrade Yunusa recounted that despite previously going on strike and later negotiating with the government to call it off, their issues remain unresolved while others have been addressed. He expressed that this situation is unacceptable.
"We staged this protest as a warning. If we are not addressed very soon, we will go on a warning strike. If that still does not yield results, we will escalate to a nationwide strike," said the Chairman.
He called on President Bola Ahmad Tinubu to disregard those creating obstacles and attempting to undermine his administration. He emphasized the importance of SSANU and NASU, stating that anyone working in government, particularly in universities, must recognize their significance.
Comrade Yunusa concluded his speech by appreciating the solidarity shown by the unions and members who participated in the protest lawfully.
The protest was organized and concluded peacefully.
