The Zamfara state government has spent N1.5 billion on the renovation and upgrading of hostels at two educational institutions in the state. The first phase of the intervention benefits Government Science Secondary School and Zamfara State College of Arts and Science (ZACAS).
Speaking to journalists after conducting an on-the-spot assessment of the completed first phase, the State Commissioner for Education, Mallam Wadatau Madawaki, said the contract for the work resulted from the declaration of a state of emergency on education by Governor Dauda Lawal.
Madawaki expressed satisfaction with the quality of the work carried out by the contractor at the two schools he visited. He explained that the Dauda Lawal-led administration has prioritized the education sector, leading to the renovation and upgrading of educational infrastructure to ensure a conducive learning and working environment for students and staff.
He mentioned that the state government is focusing on science, technical, and entrepreneurial education to instil skills in students, especially female students. Plans are at an advanced stage for establishing nine technical education schools to equip students with technical skills.
"To develop science, technical, and entrepreneurship education, nine schools have been earmarked, three in each senatorial district," he added.
Madawaki highlighted that entrepreneurship education would be taught at Girls Secondary School Moriki, Government Girls College Talata Mafara, and Government Girls Unity School Kotorkoshi.
Regarding manpower, the commissioner disclosed that the state government plans to recruit 200 qualified teachers specializing in technical and vocational education to improve the quality of education.
The Education Commissioner urged students of the Zamfara State College of Arts and Science to make the best use of the new infrastructure to enhance their academic performance.
