Zamfara-based philanthropist Abdulhafiz Umar Barau has awarded scholarships to 21 students of Sahel College of Health Sciences and Advanced Studies, Gusau.
The scholarships were provided through the AUG Foundation, a non-governmental organization funded by Barau.
During the presentation of payment receipts to the beneficiaries in Gusau on Friday, an official of the foundation, Abdul Bala Gusau, stated that the gesture is part of the foundation's commitment to supporting education in the state.
Bala Gusau said, "Today, we disbursed a total of one million and fifty thousand naira to 21 students at Sahel College of Health Sciences. Each of the 21 students received N50,000 to help cover their school fees for the 2023/2024 academic session."
He explained that the initiative aims to alleviate the prevailing economic hardships that make it difficult for some students to pay their school fees.
According to him, the beneficiaries were selected from financially challenged families who struggle to meet educational expenses due to economic challenges.
"This foundation is a non-profit charity organization dedicated to serving humanity. Our primary focus is on supporting orphans and less privileged individuals," he explained.
"In addition to this, we have also covered registration fees for underprivileged students at Abdu-Gusau Polytechnic, Talata Mafara, and Federal College of Education (Technical), Gusau. The foundation also implements various intervention projects for vulnerable groups."
Abdul Bala Gusau further mentioned that the foundation provided financial assistance of N120,000 to a patient, Isah Musa, to enable him to undergo surgery. Another patient, Tanibu Abubakar, received N100,000 for medical treatment.
"The foundation also built two-bedroom houses for two vulnerable households, Bala Ali and Saminu Lawali," he added.
Additionally, the foundation donated N200,000 and 500 blocks to an NGO, Action for Capacity Building (ACB), for the construction of a Youth Empowerment Center.
The Director of Sahel College, Nuhu Bashir, commended the philanthropist and foundation officials for their support of less privileged students. He noted that all the beneficiaries are pursuing various courses at the college, with many struggling to pay their school fees.
A student, Faisal Sulaiman, who spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries, described the gesture as a welcome development.
“We appreciate this support and promise to focus on our studies,” he said.
