The Niger State Ministry of Basic Education has called on stakeholders to support the campaign to drastically reduce the alarming number of out-of-school children, which currently stands at over 600,000 in the state.

The Ministry's Commissioner, Hajiya Hadiza Asebe Mohammed, made the call during a press conference on the Enrollment Drive Campaign, held in collaboration with the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment (AGILE), in Minna, the Niger State capital.

The commissioner stated that the project aims to increase student enrollment across all levels of basic and secondary education. It seeks to address the challenges of low enrollment rates and ensure that every child in the state has access to quality education.

She noted that the enrollment drive campaign will take place from September 10th to 19th, 2024, at the Emir's Palace in Minna, with community sensitization events held across the state, including zonal areas, local government areas, emirates, districts, and door-to-door visitations.

Other planned activities include the distribution of educational materials and resources to schools, providing incentives to schools that achieve significant enrollment increases, and establishing a feedback mechanism to address concerns from parents and guardians.

She emphasized that in 2022, the state recorded 263,146 out-of-school children, a figure that has risen to 600,000 by 2024. To ensure success, the Ministry plans to engage community members, traditional rulers, religious leaders, NGOs, and other stakeholders.

In her remarks, the State Coordinator of AGILE, Hajiya Maimuna Ibrahim Attahiru, explained that the World Bank-supported initiative aims to bring out-of-school children, especially girls, back to school. She highlighted the importance of education and reaffirmed the organization's total support for the mission. She also urged parents, guardians, and caregivers to support the campaign by ensuring their children complete at least secondary school.

The campaign will officially kick off on September 10th, 2024, at the Emir’s Palace in Minna, with a gathering of stakeholders, community leaders, and the media. The commissioner invites all citizens to participate in this vital initiative to build a brighter future for the children of Niger State.
