Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima, has assured the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Niger State that the Federal Government is making dedicated efforts to ensure their safe return to their homes.

The Vice President made this statement during a sympathy and assessment visit to the IDP camp at Central Primary School Gwada, in the Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

Sen. Shettima, acknowledging the Federal Government's awareness of their situation, reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to providing good governance and alleviating the suffering of the people.

He noted that the country has been severely affected by insecurity and natural disasters, leading to loss of lives and property. He also revealed that the Federal Government has allocated N3 billion to each state to address issues related to flooding.

In addition to the food and non-consumable items presented to the IDPs, the Vice President assured that the Federal Government will continue to collaborate with the state government and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to further alleviate the people's suffering.

Sen. Shettima added that states such as Borno, Niger, Sokoto, Bayelsa, and Jigawa, among others, will receive more Federal Government interventions as assessments continue.

Earlier, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago disclosed that the state has been severely impacted by insecurity and natural disasters, resulting in the creation of 14 IDP camps spread across the state.

He expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for sending a high-powered delegation, led by the Vice President, to sympathize with the government and people of the state. The governor noted that the visit and interventions demonstrate the Federal Government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people.

In an interview, the Commissioner for Humanitarian and Disaster Management, Ahmed Suleiman, and the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arra, commended the intervention from the Federal Government through NEMA. They promised to continue working in partnership to ensure the well-being of the IDPs while efforts are being made for their safe return.

Also speaking, the Chairman of Shiroro Local Government Area, Akilu Isiyaku, pledged his support to ensure the IDPs can return to their ancestral homes.

Some IDPs interviewed called on the government at all levels to do everything in their power to facilitate their return home.

A total of 46,853 IDPs, comprising men, women, and children, are spread across 14 camps in Niger State, with 5,823 residing in the Gwada camp.
