Governor Umar Namadi has called on the newly elected chairmen and vice-chairmen of the 27 local government areas in Jigawa State to prioritize accountability, transparency, and a commitment to serving the people.
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at Government House, Dutse, Governor Namadi emphasized the pivotal role of local government administration as the first point of contact between the government and citizens. He urged the new leaders to recognize their responsibilities in shaping the success of the administration and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.
"Your assumption of office as chairmen and vice-chairmen is ordained by Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala, and it is a trust bestowed upon you by Him. Certainly, He will one day question how you discharged this responsibility, so it is essential to be mindful of this,” the governor stated.
He further stressed the importance of their roles in local government affairs, saying, "The local government is the first point of contact for our people. Your ability to manage its affairs will significantly determine the success of our party."
Governor Namadi issued a stern warning against absenteeism, noting that local government chairmen must remain present and accessible within their constituencies. He warned that the administration would not tolerate officials residing outside their jurisdictions.
"Let me be clear: you must be at your duty post, staying with your people. The practice of being away—today in Kano, tomorrow in Kaduna, or Dutse—will not be accepted. Whether the situation is good or bad, you must remain in your local government areas and take care of your people. This is crucial," the governor said.
In addition to urging physical presence, Governor Namadi emphasized the need for transparency and accountability in managing local government resources, reminding the officials that public funds are meant for the benefit of the people.
"You should understand that the resources at your disposal belong to the people of your local government, not to you or your family. Handle this responsibility with the utmost fear of Allah and accountability to the people. Ensure that whatever you do is in the best interest of your constituents," he added.
Governor Namadi also warned the new officials to steer clear of land allocation matters, which he stated is the exclusive responsibility of the governor unless otherwise delegated.
"I want to strongly caution you that the issue of land allocation is solely the governor’s responsibility. Unless the governor delegates this to you, you have no right to allocate or sell land. Misconduct in this area will result in severe consequences, as it is a violation of the law. Stay away from land allocation—it is not your responsibility," the governor concluded.
