Human rights activist Alhaji Mahdi Shehu has secured the release of 55 inmates with minor offenses from Kaduna and Zaria correctional centers.
Speaking to journalists in Zaria, Shehu explained that his initiative aimed to offer relief to the inmates and help them reintegrate as productive members of society. He emphasized the importance of supporting individuals with minor offenses, as they could become future leaders if given a second chance.
Shehu, founder and CEO of Dialogue Computers Kaduna, noted that the released youths were detained for minor offenses such as fighting, debt, and petty theft driven by hunger and poverty. A total of 46 inmates were freed from Kaduna and 9 from Zaria, each receiving a token of twenty thousand naira for transportation home.
