The Director-General and CEO of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, has reiterated his commitment to transitioning the institute’s operations from laboratory-level skills to full-scale industrial production.

“We'll vacate to Site II to boost the production of leather products from laboratory skills to industrial skills,” Dr. Imam declared during a facility tour at NILEST's Zaria headquarters.

Dr. Imam, recently appointed as NILEST’s Chief Executive Officer, undertook the inspection alongside his management team as part of a familiarization initiative. Thursday's tour continued the inspection of facilities previously visited, reflecting the DG’s hands-on approach to understanding the institute’s capacities and challenges.

The information was contained in a press statement issued by Nuhu Basheer Masa, Personal Assistant (Media and Communication) to the Director-General, emphasizing Dr. Imam's enthusiasm for utilizing these facilities to establish NILEST as a leader in leather technology and innovation.

The statement further added that, the team began the day by visiting the nearly completed Leather Entrepreneurship Development Building, a state-of-the-art facility that is 75 percent complete. Expressing satisfaction with the quality and progress of the project, Dr. Imam remarked on its potential to significantly enhance NILEST's leather production capabilities.

Following this, the team proceeded to the Dache Chemical Complex, home to the Directorates of Science and Technology and Polymer Technology.

The tour included detailed inspections of the Environmental Analysis, Enzymes, Instruments, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Colour Chemistry, and Computer Laboratories, among others. Dr. Imam also visited the Department of General Studies, where he reviewed innovative products created by students in the Entrepreneurship Class.

The tour concluded with a visit to NILEST's Site II, located opposite the Army School of Legal Services on Basawa Road. At this site, Dr. Imam inspected ongoing developments, including the massive Military Boot Production Line, a 500-capacity lecture theatre, and extensive road layouts. He commended the progress, describing it as “smooth and promising.”

This proactive approach reflects Dr. Imam’s commitment to transforming NILEST into a hub for industrial leather production, bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.
