In its efforts to strengthen health systems and enhance health security, the World Health Organization (WHO) has partnered with the Journalists Initiative on Immunization against Polio (JAP) cultural troupe to support the Kaduna State Primary Health Care Board (SPHCB) in addressing challenges related to Outbreak Response (OBR) implementation in high-risk settlements.
As part of this initiative, JAP conducted local theater and roadshow performances in the Soba community, Soba Local Government Area, targeting hotspot settlements with high rates of non-compliance.
The performances attracted families and children, creating opportunities for vaccinators to reach and immunize children who had previously missed their vaccinations. This intervention led to the successful immunization of 207 children, thereby reducing the number of zero-dose cases in the area.
At the event, Mallam Muhammad Buhari, the Wakilin Fulanin Zazzau and traditional focal person for Soba LGA called on religious and community leaders to support government efforts to improve children's health.
He emphasized the importance of addressing non-compliance to avoid a resurgence of polio cases. He highlighted the need for community commitment to ensure children aged 0–5 years receive vaccinations for a healthier future.
Similarly, the Sarkin Marwa of Soba Local Government, Mallam Yusuf Yusha’u, appealed for compliance with expert advice on health matters. He stressed the importance of ensuring that no child is left out of the ongoing polio vaccination campaign.
Mallam Yusha’u also commended the SPHCB and partners like WHO for their efforts and resources dedicated to promoting children's well-being.
This program is part of WHO's ongoing commitment to supporting the Kaduna State Government in achieving Nigeria's national goal of interrupting polio transmission.
By employing innovative strategies to reach non-compliant and zero-dose settlements, WHO remains steadfast in ensuring that no child is left unvaccinated, contributing to a polio-free future for all.
