Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, the Director General of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST), appeared before the National Assembly today to defend the 2025 budget for the Ministry of Innovations, Science and Technology. He was joined by Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji, the Honorable Minister of Innovations, Science and Technology, at the Senate hearing held in Abuja.
The session, presided over by Senator Aminu Iya Abbas, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Innovations, Science and Technology, also included Hon. Adelegbe Oluwatimehin, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Innovations, Science, and Research, alongside other committee members.
The hearing opened with remarks from the committee chairmen, after which Chief Nnaji presented the ministry’s budget proposal for 2025. Subsequent presentations were made by Directors General and Managing Directors of various agencies under the ministry.
In his address, Dr. Imam highlighted the pressing need for increased federal funding for the leather and science technology sector. “An enhanced financial commitment from the government is crucial for the growth of this sector, which has significant potential to drive socio-economic development across the nation,” he said.
Nuhu Basheer Masa, the Personal Assistant on Media and Communication to the DG NILEST, described the budget defence as an important step in securing the resources needed to position the leather industry and science technology as pivotal drivers of innovation and economic progress in Nigeria.
The 2025 budget, submitted in December 2024, outlines key initiatives and projects aimed at advancing innovations, science, and research, with the leather industry identified as a critical area for economic diversification.
