The National Hydro Electric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has restored potable water supply to Bida and its environs in Niger State, ending two decades of water scarcity in the town.

The Director of Engineering and Technical Services at the commission, Dr. Itilatyaa Daniel, announced this on Friday during an inspection of the rehabilitated waterworks in Bida.

“The rehabilitation of the Bida water supply project by N-HYPPADEC is 90% complete and ready for commissioning,” Dr. Daniel stated. “The waterworks plant, which has been moribund for over 20 years, is being restored to provide potable water to the town and its environs after years of hardship.”

He further explained that the commission has procured and is installing five MVA transformers to ensure a steady power supply to the water treatment plant, enabling uninterrupted water provision for the area.

“This rehabilitation will permanently solve the perennial water supply challenges in Bida and its environs,” Dr. Daniel assured. “We are committed to completing the installation of the transformers promptly, and the commissioning of the project will take place soon.”

The Head of the Electrical Division at N-HYPPADEC, Engineer Ibrahim Adamu Haruna, provided additional details about the power upgrades. He noted that the five MVA transformers, essential for running the water treatment pumps, have been tested and confirmed satisfactory.

“The 11 KVA line has been upgraded to a 33 KVA line, which is sufficient to power the pumps,” Engineer Haruna explained. “Once completed, the project will have the capacity to treat 5,000 cubic liters of water per hour, alleviating the suffering of approximately two million residents in the area.”

The restoration of the Bida water supply marks a significant milestone in addressing long-standing infrastructure deficits in the region.
