The Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology (NILEST) has elevated its Maiduguri Extension Centre to the status of a Northeast Regional Centre. The announcement was made by the institute’s Director General (DG) and Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Auwal Mustapha Imam, during a visit to Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, at the Government House in Maiduguri.

This was contained in a statement signed by Nuhu Basheer Masa, the Personal Assistant (Media & Communication) to the DG, NILEST on Thursday, January 9, 2025.

As part of the upgrade, Dr. Imam appointed Dr. Usman Ali Busuguma, a native of Borno State, as the Northeast Regional Manager. The DG also announced the dedication of the centre as the Northeast Distance Learning Centre, aimed at expanding access to education and training opportunities in the region.

Governor Zulum’s Commitment

Governor Zulum commended the efforts of Dr. Imam in enhancing skills acquisition and improving the socio-economic conditions of the state through the establishment of the Regional Centre. He expressed gratitude for the DG’s contributions to making the state a hub for innovation in leather and science technology.

The governor also revealed plans to sponsor 60 Borno indigenes to study leather technology, footwear design, and other related fields at NILEST. In addition, he pledged to reconstruct the institute’s perimeter fence, which was damaged during the devastating floods of September 2024. Governor Zulum further announced the donation of two housing units in Maiduguri to support the institute’s operations, emphasizing his commitment to fostering a strong partnership with NILEST.

In his remarks, Dr. Imam expressed deep appreciation to Governor Zulum and the Borno State Government for their continuous support.

He assured that NILEST would work closely with the state and the Northern Governors Forum, chaired by Governor Zulum, to advance research and development in leather and leather products. Dr. Imam noted the critical role of the leather industry in driving economic growth and pledged to enhance productivity through innovation and collaboration.

The elevation of the Maiduguri Centre to a Regional Hub is expected to provide expanded opportunities for skills acquisition, research, and technological advancement, benefiting communities across the Northeast region.
