An Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) in Niger State, Shafi’u Usman Bawa (AP/No 337979), reportedly took his own life on Saturday afternoon in Kontagora Local Government Area.
According to initial reports, the officer's father, Mr. Usman Bawa—a resident of the Rigasa area in Kontagora—discovered his son's lifeless body hanging from the ceiling. He immediately alerted the police command, prompting a swift response from officers.
Police later transported the body to the General Hospital in Kontagora, where a medical doctor confirmed the death. Following standard procedures, the remains were released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
A police statement provided further details, stating that at approximately 14:10 hours on Saturday, February 8, 2025, Mr. Usman Bawa reported that his son, ASP Shafi’u Usman Bawa, had died by suicide. Authorities assured that further updates would be provided as investigations continue.
Efforts to obtain comments from a spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of this report.
