By Abubakar Sadiq Mohd, Zaria

The development Research and Projects Centre (dRPC) has sought the support of Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli to protect women and girls against Gender-Base violence via Islamic perspective.

This can be achieved through proper engagement of the Muslim Opinion Leaders for Gender-Base Violence.

Barrister Umar Ahmad Umar, Senior Program Associate and Project Leader of the dRPC solicited the support during an advocacy visit to present an overview of its initiatives to the Emir at his palace in Zaria.

He said the overview was aimed at advancing women's protection and empowerment in Kaduna and
Kano States.

Our Correspondant report that dRPC, is a Nigerian non-profit organization established in 1993 by senior lecturers from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) and Bayero University Kano (BUK), working in the areas of public health, education and women's economic empowerment.

He said currently the centre is implementing the Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) for GBV Prevention Project aimed at strengthening  capacity to effectively communicate, advocate, and drive positive change in the prevention of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) across Northern Nigeria.

Umar said the MOLs for GBV Prevention Project is a strategic initiative designed to address Gender-Base Violence in Northern Nigeria by leveraging on the influence and authority of religious leaders
to challenge harmful cultural norms and practices from Islamic perspective that contribute to violence against women and girls.

To this regard, the Project leader noted that the centre had facilitated a Peer-to-Peer Study Tour in Egypt, where selected Muslim Opinion Leaders (MOLs) engaged with esteemed Islamic institutions, including Al-Azhar University and the Grand Mufti's Office on the Islamic perspective in tackling the GBV.

"So far, over 50 Imams, 50 Sharia Court Judges, and female Da’awah group leaders were sensitized through step-down training workshops.

Earlier, Malam Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli, Emir of Zazzau while appreciating the effort of the centre, appealed for a revisit of the Kano Muslim Personnel Law towards enhancing girls and women's rights in Northern Nigeria.

Bamalli noted that the provisions in the legal system was limited thereby hindering women's rights; hence the need for the application of the codified Law to strengthen the rights of women and girls in the region.

The Emir opined that when passed into law, the draft bill  may become applicable all over the country.
